High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy is an oxygen supply system capable of delivering up to 100% humidified and heated oxygen at a flow rate of up to 60 liters per minute.
Therefore, a nasal cannula set at a 1 L/min flow rate can increase FiO2 to 24%, 2 L/min to 28%, 3 L/min to 32%, 4 L/min to 36%, 5 L/min to 40%, and 6 L/min to 44%.
What FiO2 is 6 LPM of supplemental oxygen? At 6 LPM, the approximate FiO2 is 44%.
High-flow oxygen therapy through a nasal cannula is a technique whereby a mixture of heated and humidified oxygen and air are delivered to the nose at high flow rates.
Rates of 4 liters/minute or greater are considered higher oxygen flow.
The highest flow oxygen concentrators output oxygen flow at 10 liters per minute.
Every liter/minute of oxygen increases the percentage of O2 the patient breathes by 3 – 4 %. Room air is 21% O2. So if a patient is on 4 L/min O2 flow, then he or she is breathing air that is about 33 – 37% O2.
With each LPM of supplemental oxygen, the patient receives an additional 3-4% of oxygen, so a patient receiving 3 LPM during oxygen therapy would be breathing air that is approximately 30-33% oxygen.
RED = 10-12L/min = 40% O2. GREEN = 12-15L/min = 60% O2.
Normal Values and SpO2 Targets
94% - 98% (PaO2 between 80 and 100 mmHg) in patients without cyanotic congenital heart disease or chronic lung disease. > 70% (PaO2 37 mmHg) in patients who have had cardiac surgery of their congenital cyanotic heart disease.
